Supporting Practical Drone Policies for Safer Critical Infrastructure

May 12, 2026

SOCMA supports the Federal Aviation Administration’s proposed rule to address unauthorized drone activity around critical infrastructure, recognizing the growing need for clear and enforceable protections in U.S. airspace. These actions represent meaningful progress in strengthening site security, ensuring safe drone operations, and protecting American innovation.

Our members operate complex, high-value chemical manufacturing facilities that are increasingly vulnerable to unauthorized drone activity. This proposed rule addresses long-standing concerns across our industry, and we look forward to working with the FAA and DOT to ensure implementation reflects the needs of our sector while upholding safety, resilience, and American leadership in critical manufacturing. Not only have we been engaged on this issue, we were formally invited by the FAA to participate in the Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC), where our insight was actively sought.

SOCMA remains committed to advancing practical, risk-informed policies that strengthen infrastructure security while supporting innovation and safe integration of emerging technologies.
