SOCMA Joins National Security Agencies and Allied Trades in Calling for Reinstatement of CFATS

Arlington, VA – In a press conference this week, SOCMA President and CEO Jennifer Abril joined with other leading organizations calling for the reinstatement of the CFATS program.

In her remarks, Abril discussed how SOCMA members’ niche within the chemical space is uniquely challenging, with products and processes that are continually evolving and detailed how CFATS has been crucial in adding an extra layer of security that is of paramount importance to not only to specialty chemical companies, but to our national security.

Appearing alongside SOCMA were representatives of Congress, National Security Council, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, American Chemistry Council, Alliance for Chemical Distribution, The Fertilizer Institute, and American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers.

Abril’s remarks:

“On behalf of The Society of Chemical Manufacturers & Affiliates, I want to express my strong support for the reinstatement of the CFATS program.

As the association representing small to midsize specialty chemical and batch chemical manufacturers, SOCMA’s niche within the chemical space is unique. Our members produce customized specialty chemicals in small batches, with products and processes that are continually evolving.

The collaboration and partnership with DHS has been instrumental in evolving security measures to meet the ever-changing landscape of specialty chemical manufacturing. CFATS, in particular, has been crucial in adding an extra layer of security that is of paramount importance to not only our companies, but to our national security.

The risk-based approach adopted by DHS is smart regulation. CFATS enhances security by customizing measures to fit the unique characteristics of each facility. This approach is especially crucial when dealing with small-batch, specialty chemical facilities, where a one-size-fits-all strategy proves ineffective.

CFATS acknowledges the diversity among specialty chemical makers – differences in products, manufacturing facilities, and vulnerabilities. This recognition allows for a nuanced and targeted security strategy that is essential for the varied nature of our sector.

DHS, with its wealth of knowledge and resources, has been instrumental in fortifying our national security infrastructure.”
